The recent flooding in the North East "happened so quickly that no one had time to do any thing to minimise losses" according to Jeff McMahon, commercial and technical claims manager at Zurich Commercial.

Several rivers in the area broke their banks after a night of torrential rainfall. A total of 12 red warnings were given out at the peak of the flooding, with many more yellow and amber warnings. The River Gaunless reached the highest levels ever recorded, according to The Environment Agency
