Zurich UK's general insurance business has reported marginal growth of 2% to nearly £2.1bn in gross written premiums for 2008 as well as an improved combined ratio of 95.7% (104.8% in 2007).

CEO Guy Munnoch described the results as extremely positive and said the figures reflected an "ongoing focus and drive to grow profitably".

"Any growth is great as long as it's profitable and we are delighted," he said. "Our position for 2009 is that we are prepared to shed income as a result of the rating
