With the threat of burglary a very real consideration for every household in the UK, there are many precautions that property owners can take - without turning their homes into fortresses. And brokers are always happy to give advice.

According to the Association of British Insurers, around 1.6 million
homes in the UK are broken into each year*. Encouragingly, domestic
burglary rates actually dropped by 5% in 1999**, continuing the downward
trend of the last five years. But, overall, the trend since 1981 shows a
massive increase of 130%, with insurance companies paying out more than
£500m a year in property theft claims.
