Allianz’s Graham Gibson reviews 2016 and looks ahead to 2017


From severe weather to success with the IFB the past 12 months have been packed with action for Allianz’s claims director. What will 2017 hold?

What was the most shocking insurance event of 2016?
The devastating levels of damage caused by severe weather which began last December and continued into early 2016.

I believe as an industry we had learnt from past events and responded well during challenging circumstances.

I am particular proud of our Allianz claims team, who ensured that within two hours of claims coming in, 95% of our customers had an appointment confirmed with an Allianz representative.

Since then our priority has been to continue to provide financial, practical and emotional support to our customers.

Who was the stand-out star of the insurance world in 2016?
With such an eventful year for the industry, it's hard to pick just one!

One highlight of 2016 was the Insurance Fraud Bureau celebrating ten successful years of working in partnership with brokers and insurers to tackle insurance fraud.

I also think that the Association of British Insurers has done a great job at raising public awareness about flood risk and providing reassurance that the insurance industry is doing all it can for its customers.

From a personal perspective, I thought the achievements by Allianz's ParalympicsGB athlete ambassadors and the whole team in Rio this year was inspiring.

How do you think the insurance market will change in 2017?
I really hope to see major changes resulting from the whiplash consultation which closes on 6 January.

It is great news for motorists that the government has followed through on its promise of whiplash reforms, but in 2017 we must see the introduction of sufficiently robust measures if we are to properly tackle the issue and achieve a permanent resolution.

Will Brexit mean anything to insurance in 2017?
In 2017 we should become a step closer to understanding the full impact of Brexit.

It's important that we not only think about how it affects our own industry, but also remain up to speed with how it affects our customers.

From a claims perspective, we would not want to see the impact of Brexit hold up the whiplash reforms nor impact the cost of goods and services we purchase from across Europe.
