I have read a series of stories in the last few weeks about well qualified people in their late fifties in the US, struggling to return to work. The articles raise serious questions about the nature of retirement and the lasting effects of the recession.

Many of the workers that featured had great careers and would have been ramping up their savings in the final years before retirement. Now they find themselves sending out CV after CV in an attempt to get any kind of job, and worried if their age is hampering their abilities to find work.
