Government to scrap default retirement age

alarm-clock

Employers will no longer be able to make people retire at 65 under new laws.

The coalition government is introducing new legislation from October next year to end the default retirement age meaning there will be no time limit on retirement. Employment relations minister Edward Davey said: "With more and more people wanting to extend their working lives, we should not stop them because they have reached a particular age."

However, business groups have criticised the timescales involved, saying there is not enough time to prepare for the introduction of the legislation.
