Following a barrage of frenzied press speculation, a deal between Jardine Lloyd Thompson and Heath Lambert Group failed to materialise.

A Heath Lambert spokesman said: "The more we looked at the deal, the more it wasn't going to work."

Instead, Heath Lambert is concentrating on a policy of growth. The spokesman continued: "Everybody is going through hard times and so did we two years ago. We have been through an extensive restructuring process and are now free to get on with growing."
