The Skills Council for Financial Services examination structure is backed by £2m public funding, according to Jack Matthews, director of operations for the Sector Skills Development Agency.

The SCFS launched its examination structure in September, and Matthews used the opportunity to set out the importance of skills councils.

He said: "Skills councils have replaced national training organisations. The SSDA was set up in June 2002, sponsored by the Department of Further Education and the Department
