The burning issue of hot food in the office.

Q: I work for a medium-sized broker in a city centre. There is no room away from our desks for us to take a break and we are also banned from eating hot food on the premises. We feel that this is unfair, especially in winter. Do we have any legal stance?

A: Employers have a general duty to ensure, as is reasonably
practicable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees while at
work.

Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, the
requirement for the provision of adequate ventilation, lighting, equipment
maintenance and suitable and sufficient washing facilities are
included.

There is no legal requirement on the issue of eating hot food on the
premises and an employer is not bound to make this facility available to
you.
