The Consumers' Association has called on the industry to work with consumer groups to restore confidence in the industry.

Mick McAteer, senior policy adviser at the CA, told delegates at the Chartered Insurance Institute conference that consumers expect better standards of training and competence.

He said: "People want better standards of service, unbiased financial advice, high standards of corporate governance and real competition.

"This is a defining moment for the industry. If they do not compromise or work with consumer groups they will be shown no mercy."
