Darling increases National Insurance again; small business tax increase deferred

Chancellor Alistair Darling announces his pre-Budget report

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling has announced today, in his pre-Budget report, another hike in National Insurance contributions by 0.5% from April 2011 in addition to the announcement last year to increase contributions by 0.5% for all employees and employers. However, it will not change for those earning less than £20,000. The measure will earn an extra £3bn a year from 2011-12.

Highlights include:

A revision of this year's economy estimate from shrinking 3.5% to 4.75%

A government
