Government investigates credit ratings agencies

The committee has invited written submissions on a range of topics including whether the ratings agencies have the right incentives to perform their jobs properly and has asked if they have conflicts of interest.

It will also investigate the accountability of the agencies and if the "big three" have become too powerful.

The investigation came shortly after Standard & Poor's announced it was placing a negative watch on 15 insurance companies including Axa, Allianz and Aviva.
