Government’s motor insurance taskforce report sparks ‘fudge’ and ‘credible job’ reactions

The government has published its Motor Insurance Taskforce Report, whose work has been both praised as a “credible job” and slammed as “rehash” and a “fudge”.

It was set up as a cross-government initiative in October 2024 to understand the market and agree a set of actions aiming to stabilise and reduce the premiums paid by drivers.

The promise at the time was to bring together industry groups and consumer champions such as the Association of British Insurers, Citizens Advice and Which? as well as insurance regulators, to tackle “the spiralling costs of car insurance”.
