PB Week: You wait all week and then . . .

You work hard all week, so when you go to the football to follow your team, you expect excitement, passion, skills, commitment and above all a win, writes Andrew Tjaardstra, editor of Professional Broking .

Well at Goodison Park on Saturday Everton fans got . . . a win. Everton Fulham was never going to be a humdinger but when our overpaid footballers who spend all their week training can’t string a couple of passes together you do feel slightly robbed as a fan. However, Louis Saha’s first goal for the club allowed us Evertonians to forgive the preceding dross and cheer on our team. My three neutral friends were not quite so forgiving.

Cover note returned . . . eight years later

Car insurance specialist Herts Insurance Consultants had a shock when a cover note it sent out was returned by the Royal Mail eight years later. Postmarked 1 November 2000 it was returned ‘address unknown’ on 15 October a few weeks ago. Peter Cook, underwriting manager at HIC, commented: “I wouldn’t mind, but we sent it first class. As it happens this was just a 30-day temporary cover note. Let’s hope we don’t get the customer’s policy documents [it was an owner of a high performance Gulf Gti based in Bath] back in next week’s post.” He added: “The cover note isn’t really needed any more. I remember the days when brokers might have to use five or six cover notes before the final annual certificate arrived from the insurance company. These days we can issue an annual certificate in the office the very same day that the insurance is taken out. So this cover note is a little piece of history.”

The Royal Mail made £177m worth of profits in the first half of the year. Let's hope they spend them wisely.

Together with experts from Peninsula we are providing you and your clients some comprehensive advice for free. Sign up to the London event (quote reference 9659) which is the morning of Wednesday 19 November or for Manchester on 4 December (quote reference 9662) at the Lowry Hotel. STOP PRESS

The Bank of England has just cut interest rates to 3%. That is a 1.5% cut. Hopefully that should give the economy some cheer.
