In what is on course to be the wettest year since records began in 1766, 2007's floods have resulted in more than 50,000 claims being handled by Britain's beleaguered insurance companies.

The Met Office revealed that July saw an incredible 127mm of rain fall - more than double the normal average of 62mm.

According to the Association of British Insurers, insured losses could exceed £2.5bn, with spokeswoman Kelly Ostler stating that the total claims including uninsured losses could reach £5bn.
