The Markel Corporation has reported an increase in net income from £42m in 2003 to £68m for the year ended 31 December, 2002. Its underwriting profit for 2003 had a combined ratio of 99% compared with a combined ratio of 103% for 2002. Alan Kirshner, chairman and chief executive officer of Markel Corporation, said: "We are well positioned to continue to produce strong underwriting and investment results in 2004."
