John Parker, head of general insurance at the Association of British Insurers has called for the industry to increase its vigilance in order to prevent another Independent-style crash.
Speaking at last week's Chartered Insurance Institute conference, Mr Parker said: "What is the role for market intelligence?" he asked. "The Financial Services Authority needs to keep its ears close to the ground in order to be able to distinguish between bar-room gossip and a genuine problem."
