Norwich Union has lost the Nationwide household underwriting contract
to direct insurer Churchill Insurance.


The composite insurer inherited the account when it bought London &
Edinburgh at the end of 1998.


However, the contract to underwrite the building society's range of
buildings and contents policies, and to provide claims support, was
awarded to Churchill last month, and will take effect from February
2000.


Nationwide currently has one million household insurance policies in
