While electronic trading is now taking a firm grip of the personal lines market, the same cannot be said of the commercial sector. Colin Harper looks at the reasons why.

Few could dispute that the direct writers were a catalyst for
development of electronic trading in the private car market. However,
those who assumed that this activity would simply roll over into
commercial lines business have been somewhat disappointed.


Although software houses and insurers have invested millions of pounds in
developing commercial lines systems, ranging from quote-only to full-cycle
EDI, these are really only designed to handle package products at the
small end of the market.
