Petwise, a menu-rated product for pet insurance, has been developed by Thornside, the specialist pet underwriting agency.
The Petwise quote engine takes into account specific rating factors such as the animal's breed, age, postcode and gender to calculate a premium relative to the actual risk.
It is available on the new Petwise website at www.petwise-insurance.com.
David Seel, managing director of Thornside, said: "Most pet insurance is underwritten on an unsophisticated level so you pay the same for an expensive pedigree dog as you do for a mongrel.
"The quote engine works in the same way as motor insurance, so you pay the right premium according to the risk."
Thornside uses a number of Lloyd's and company markets to place business.
It has more than 20 affinity group clients including brokers, affinity groups and bancassurers. Commission levels are 12.5% and upwards, depending on volume.
