Podcast: Reid and Clegg present Double Indemnity – episode eight, Holborn Underwriting’s Sukie Harrar

Sukie Harrar, CEO of Holborn Underwriting, is the eighth guest on Insurance Age’s Double Indemnity podcast series and the first actuary on the show.

When he joined the profession in 1991, there were fewer than 200 qualified GI actuaries, now the total is in the thousands.

With the burgeoning headcount, Harrar unpacks what actuaries bring to the insurance industry and his work with complex numbers to deliver results that benefit all parties.

Sharing a practical guide on the process for brokers adding MGAs to a portfolio, he tells hosts Toby Clegg and Stuart Reid there is still capacity for long-term partnerships.

Harrar also addresses the hot topic of artificial intelligence: “I think AI is going to be – already is – a game changer. For everybody working in insurance, whether it is a CFO … an accountant, an actuary, an underwriter, somebody in the claims department it is going to touch all areas.”

He adds that professionals working in the insurance space that embrace the change will excel: “AI will improve what we do, it will change what we do and it is an opportunity. And I think people should treat is an opportunity rather than a challenge.”
