Old Perce was very old. He had been our village cobbler ever sincecoming out of the army after the First World War, having served as asaddler and harness-maker. His lifelong crusade seemed to have beenobjecting to authoritarians who went over the top with self-importance. Ispent many a hilarious hour listening to Perce's yarns, told in a squeakySussex brogue, about his battles with officialdom.
