
No sign of Big Brother in 1894
The Phoenix Fire Office, formed in 1782 principally to cover risks inthe sugar trade, was absorbed by the Sun Alliance at around about its200th birthday. It was a respectable and respected old office.
Recently, a local solicitor was having a bit of a spring-clean in hisoffices, which was perhaps not before time, as will be seen. He cameacross a copy of the Phoenix Fire Office 'Instructions to Agents', dated1894, and was kind enough to present it to me, knowing of my interest insuch antiques.
