UK General hits 500-scheme target

Three shrubs in a row each larger than the other

UK General Insurance has reached its 500-scheme target and laid out plans to focus on a "product-led strategy" concentrating on "profitable business, as opposed to chasing volume".

The Leeds-based specialist insurer said its schemes GWP had climbed by £70m during 2012/13, representing growth of more than 20% over the 12 months.

Although schemes MD Karen Beales recognised that schemes competition had "intensified", she insisted "there is still headroom for further growth".

Specifically, Ms Beales has identified growing UK General's property portfolio, which has recorded growth of some 35% over the past year.

"Lee Glyn will head up the property team, where we plan to introduce new products this year following increased demand from our brokers," she explained.

"We will conduct a root and branch household review to ensure our products are fit for purpose. We also plan a major push into other household products including property let and personal accident products, due to launch imminently."

She continued: "What is essential is that we proceed in partnership with our brokers, especially the specialist independent brokers who are firmly plugged into the communities they serve and understand where the likely demand for schemes is coming from."

The insurer also announced it would be launching a non-standard motor scheme for brokers in partnership with Gibraltar-based Enterprise Insurance Company.

And Ms Beales added: "Once we know what independent brokers and their customers need, we create the schemes products to satisfy demand."
