Insurance sex discrimination proposal given EC green light

Proposal now set to be put before European Parliament and Council of Ministers

The European Commission today decided to advance the principle of gender neutrality in the supply of goods and services, a move which the insurance industry has campaigned against.

Following the meeting this morning the EC presented a proposal for a Council Directive on equal treatment between men and women outside the workplace which would outlaw the use of sex as a factor in the calculation of premiums and benefits for insurance and related financial services. The proposal will now be forwarded
