Axa's UK and Ireland insurance operation recorded an increase in earnings for the first six months of 2003 from £17m the year before to £41m. Its combined ratio improved from 104.7% to 102.4%. Personal lines premium fell 8% as it lost sole rights to the RAC book.

Norwich Union General Insurance recorded a £313m operating profit and a combined ratio of 99% for the first six months of 2003. But its household account saw a drop in net premium written of £495m in the same period last year, to £467m
