The ABI launches latest crack down on uninsured drivers

Honest motorists could see motor insurance costs cut by up to £500 million a year, as a result of hard - hitting proposals to crackdown on uninsured driving published today by the ABI (Association of British Insurers). The ABI is calling for a shake up in the detection of uninsured drivers and a wider range of tougher penalties, including the confiscation of vehicles from offenders.

Over 1 million drivers - at least 5% of UK motorists - are driving illegally without insurance. Accidents involving these drivers cost more than £500 million a year, adding up to 6% (£30 a year) to the insurance premiums paid by every honest motorist in the country.

ABI records 3% home premiums rise in Q1

Average home insurance premiums for buildings and contents cover rose by 3% to £375 in the first quarter of this year, pushing the year-on-year rise up to 19%, according to the Association of British Insurers.
