I was interested to read the editorial comment about the FinancialServices Authority's intentions regarding intangible assets being written
off brokers' balance sheets (PB June, p15).
As far as I am aware, most insurance brokers do not currently include
goodwill as an asset within their balance sheets. Such an asset is surely
to be regarded as unreliable due to the inherent difficulty of achieving a
reliable value on it.
A classic example is the liquidation of the Ward Evans Insurance
Group.
