British Insurance Brokers' Association chairman Hamish Ritchie has a no-nonsense approach to insurance. The industry is in it together, he tells Diane Smyth, so brokers and insurers should take some responsibility for their own practices and not rely solely on regulators to sort out their problems.

Hamish Ritchie was originally offered the chairmanship of the British
Insurance Brokers' Association in 1990 but turned it down. As chief
executive of the UK operations of Marsh at the time, he believed he was
too heavily embroiled in the insurance market to take the post. He said at
the time: "It's not a job for the boss of Marsh, the conflicts of interest
are too great. It's a role for someone in the twilight of his career."


These words came back to haunt him in 2002 when, having become chairman
