Welcome to the Professional Broking 10th anniversary supplement commemorating not only the magazine's landmark birthday, but also the momentous events that have occurred in insurance during its lifetime.

While currently merger and acquisitions mania has given way to much form-filling, in preparation for regulation, the following pages contain various accounts of the breathtaking speed at which the industry reinvented itself in the 1990s. And this is a poignant juncture at which to take stock of the insurance landscape after arguably the greatest period of evolution in UK insurance history.

Comment from far and wide looks back over the last 10 years at the disappearance of names that had been in existence for over a century and the shift in distribution trends, which sought to keep pace with the radically changing and consolidating carriers.

While the past cannot be a foolproof indicator of future events, some well-known industry names pitch their arguments in contribution to articles looking forward to the mid and long term.

Whether change will continue at the pace it has in the last 10 years remains to be seen, but the last 10 eventful years bear testament to the fact that the entire insurance industry has seen its management conjure the adaptability and resilience to survive, which must bode well for the future.
