Government ducks the warranty issue

The government's decision to exclude extended warranties from statutory regulation is a missed opportunity to improve consumer protection, according to the Association of British Insurers.

The government set out a package of measures to assist consumers in buying an extended warranty following the publication of the Competition Commission's report into the extended warranty sector.

The ABI supports measures to increase choice and provide information to enable consumers to make informed extended warranty purchases. However, the government's decision not to bring extended warranties under FSA regulation creates uneven protection for consumers.
