Multinational brokers are no longer the dominant force in the UK, writes David Lewis, as a new breed of fast-paced, agile brokers are ready to seize control of the mainstream market. He explains how local brokers are taking on their larger competitors in their own back yard

There was a time, not so long ago, when the major players in the UK broking market threatened to sweep all before them. Strong local office networks, equipped with some of the best staff in the business and coupled with a range of products and services, made it all but impossible for smaller brokers to survive. Add the ability to negotiate market-leading deals with a range of top insurers, and multinational brokers were an almost unbeatable opponent.
