Biba to investigate government CCTV fuel proposals

Graeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba), has confirmed that the trade body’s motor committee will be looking into reports that the government may be planning to use CCTV to prevent uninsured vehicles being filled with fuel.

According to newspaper reports, government officials are considering using cameras at petrol stations to check insurance and tax details with the DVLA before drivers are able to fill their cars with fuel.

However Mr Trudgill told Insurance Age that the insurance practicalities need to be thought through first.

"What happens when someone has only just got insured? There is normally seven days to get on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and you could need petrol within that time," he said.
