Cornell Consulting's annual review of distribution in the UK commercial market estimates that growth for the top-250 independent brokers slowed to 9% in 2004. This, the report adds, is the lowest growth since 1999 and reflects the softening cycle. If it was not for a higher level of acquisitions, growth would have been lower. The total premium income controlled by independent broking is estimated to be about £11bn, and this represents 55% of the UK commercial market and 15% of personal lines.
