Motor continues to fall as home rates flat, says AA

The latest benchmark British Insurance Premium Index from the AA has shown that the downward trend in average quoted premiums for annual comprehensive car insurance policies continued over the fourth quarter of 2012.

The Shoparound summary - an average of the cheapest five quotes from a range of insurers against a nationwide basket of risks - fell by 2.9% over the three months to 31 December, to £789 - the lowest average since October 2011.

However, the AA highlighted that while average premiums were falling the figure masked considerable extremes for individual groups.

"Many commentators - and indeed some from the industry - have made unhelpful generalisations," said Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance
