Motor insurers move to help volunteers

helping-hand

Motor insurers have agreed not to charge extra premiums to volunteers who want to use their cars to help out their local communities such as by taking old and sick people to hospital appointments or on day trips.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said the commitment covered 54 insurance brands representing over 85% of the motor insurance market. The move was agreed after talks with the voluntary sector showed that some people found barriers to volunteering work either through extra charges or bureaucratic requirements.

The ABI explained that the commitment applied to private car insurance policies. It added that policyholders must be using their own vehicle and will be allowed to accept expenses
