The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has refused to confirm claims by the BBC that it is preparing to impose fines of up to £1m each on 10 'big names' in the payment protection insurance (PPI) sector.

Citing an unnamed source, the BBC said that several prominent high-street firms were facing fines for mis-selling PPI.

A spokesman for the FSA would not be drawn on an exact number of firms facing enforcement, but admitted that there were several cases in the pipeline. He added that the regulator
