Unfair dismissal costs could hurt businesses

New compensation limits for unfair dismissal and higher statutory redundancy payments effective from February 1, 2009, expose firms to further increases in costs, according Allianz Insurance.

The new limits, which apply from February 1, are:

• A week's redundancy pay will increase from £330 to £350

• The maximum statutory redundancy payment increases from £9,900 to £10,500

• The maximum compensatory award from unfair dismissal will rise from £63,000 to £66,200

Allianz said that 50% of calls made to its Lawphone helpline in the last three months were employment-related with the most typical coming from businesses requesting legal advice prior to embarking on redundancy programmes.
