Market moves: Something for everyone

From Ageas’ Mark Cliff moving to Brightside to Nicolas Aubert swapping AIG for Willis there has certainly been no shortage of personnel news in recent weeks. On the broker side Kerry London’s managing director departed and Lorica made its usual swathe of appointments including the re-emergence of former Scotland and Northern Ireland Gallagher chief Alan McEwan into the market. Also north of the border, GS Group took on two new recruits as part of an expansion push. There were arrivals at insurers as well as the high profile departures. RSA has a new claims director, Ecclesiastical has a new underwriting director and Ageas has three new specialist motor underwriters. Managing general agents were also suitably busy with the big hitters owned by Towergate and Gallagher getting in on the action. Compass Broker Services and Close Brothers Premium Finance also announced appointments in what was a busy month for all sectors.

Brokers

There were two big announcements in the broker market last month as Mark Cliff resigned from Ageas (see box below) to move to Brightside and Willis confirmed the appointment of Nicolas Aubert from AIG. Both moves will take effect next year. Aubert was the chief operating officer of AIG in Europe, Middle East and Africa and was also formerly the managing director of AIG in the UK. He will become the chief executive officer of Willis UK Insurance and will initially report to incumbent

Broking profits fall at Saga

Underlying profit before tax in Saga’s insurance broking arm fell to £39.8m for the year ended 31 January 2024, compared with £71.5m in the previous period.
