Podcast: Reid and Clegg present Double Indemnity – episode 15, Paul Upton

Paul Upton, founder and principal consultant at Brookhurst Advisory, kicks off the latest wave of Insurance Age’s Double Indemnity podcast series.

Upton started his career at Independent Insurance, working his way quickly up the firm through six or seven jobs in eight years.

He tells Stuart Reid and Toby Clegg how, when Independent went “belly up”, he ended up at Axa and subsequently cofounded his own MGA Evolution Underwriting.

The idea was to enable brokers to place business in a friction-free way, and it grew over the years, eventually being sold to Gallagher in 2015.

Since leaving in 2017, he has gone on to work with underwriters, managing general agents and distributors as a consultant, giving him a truly broad waterfront to assess the industry.

Sharing with the hosts that he wouldn’t have had his career any other way, he says: “I have loved every minute of it and I still love it now.

“I genuinely love this industry. I have had so much fun. I’ve learned so much and I still learn every day. I still meet new people that I engage with and are interested in and love talking to.

“My message would be, just find a role you like, don’t try and be something you are not, and just really go for it.”
