The great brokers' match between Norwich Union and brokers took place at a London location on Wednesday 28 February. Grant Ellis, Paul Meehan and Chris Blackham managed to trounce John Kitson's team by ten goals to five.

Professional Broking has Overheard that Blackham is "enthusiastic and a very fit man - a good goalkeeper but a rubbish left back."

Our spy also reported that: "Paul was very good as right back and took control. We also picked up a stray - a guy called Gary in reception in a Totttenham kit who turned out to be the worst footballer we'd ever seen. We assumed he worked at the club but it turned out nobody knew him."

The fashion sense at the game was something of a spectacle. John Kitson was wearing swimming shorts of all things and Chris Blackham had donned a pair of rugby shorts with the numbers 1984 on them. However, the most worrying was Paul Meehan who was allegedly wearing something that resembled a mini-skirt.

The real star of the game was Broker Network's Grant Ellis, who scored three goals for the brokers. In the end, brokers' honour was maintained beyond doubt, although there was some confusion at points over whether Chris Blackham was playing on the broker's or the insurer's team.

Off field PB's deadlines loomed and we thought we'd better double check that cover star Joe Henderson was happy with some of his more unforgiving comments made in this month's interview. Being an unequivocal type of guy his answer left us in no doubt that he was. We asked if he was comfortable with his comparison between consolidators and bargain basement supermarket chain Aldi - on the basis that they may be offended. Joe exclaimed: "I don't give a sh**, in fact can you change it to Netto?!" Joe is one character Overheard suspects will be proudly flying the flag of independence for some time yet. When asked in an earlier conversation if he gets out to many industry do's he said: "I tend not to as I just get into an argument and end up punching someone!" which brought a smile to the PB teams' faces, from a safe distance obviously.

End of Year Review 2025: Alps’ Michelle O’Reilly

Michelle O’Reilly, managing director at Alps, expresses disappointment that whilst some parts of the market have talked a good game on innovation and customer care, they have not followed through; and predicts 2026 could be the year the Financial Conduct Authority steps in with tougher measures on home insurance claim declinatures.
