Allan Bridgewater, former chairman of the Association of British Insurers, president of the Chartered Insurance Institute and leader of Norwich Union died on 5 August aged 81.

Mr Bridgewater started as an office boy at 16 at Scottish Union, which was bought by Norwich Union in 1959, and rose through the company to become general manager in 1984 and chief executive in 1989. In 1997 he led the company through demutualisation paving the way to the creation of the modern day Aviva.
