Annual inflation rate rises again
According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in the year to April, the consumer prices index (CPI) rose by 3.7%, up from 3.4% in March.
The figure is used by the Bank of England as part of the data for setting interest rates.
The organisation also reported that for the same period the all items retail prices index (RPI), which includes mortgage repayments, rose by 5.3%, up from 4.4% in March.
The ONS stated that the RPI annual inflation rate is now at its highest level since July 1991 (when it stood at 5.5%) and highlighted clothing and footwear as having the largest upward contribution to the change in the CPI annual rate.
