Rise in complaints to Financial Ombudsman Service

Data released by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has shown an 18% increase in new complaints to 82,136 for the second half of 2009 compared with the first six months of the year.

The figures for general insurance were up as well at 30,062 compared with 24,609 in January to June.

The data also showed that in the second half of 2009 the FOS upheld an average of 53% of complaints in favour of consumers, compared to 59% in the first half of the year.

The complaints data relates to individual financial businesses - including banks, insurance companies and investment firms.
