Nottingham South's Labour MP Alan Simpson has responded to the estimated £2.5bn worth of damage caused by the floods that swamped towns and cities in Yorkshire and Humberside in June by suggesting that insurance on flood plain properties should be covered by the site developers for the first 20 years.

Simpson claimed that those in high risk areas may find it impossible to afford insurance in the coming years, meaning that a change in the developers' approach is now essential.
