Livestock rustling sends claims soaring in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is the worst affected region for livestock rustling, accounting for more than 20% of claims in 2011, according to rural insurer NFU Mutual.
The Belfast Telegraph reported that livestock rustling had been in decline as thieves concentrated on valuable machinery but animal theft claims from the region doubled between 2010 and 2011.
The development has been linked to increased meat prices and improved security on farm vehicles.
In response, the police have developed a new scheme entitled “Farmwatch” to support and protect farmers.
