Insurance industry dismayed by ECJ ruling
The insurance industry has reacted with disappointment to the ruling by the European Court of Justice that as of December 2012 discriminating by gender will be unlawful for calculating insurance premiums.
Maggie Craig, the Association of British Insurers' acting director general, said: "This gender ban is disappointing news for UK consumers and something the UK insurance industry has fought against for the last decade. The judgment ignores the fact that taking a person's gender into account, where relevant to the risk, enables men and women alike to get a more accurate price for their insurance."
As the British Insurance Brokers' Association pointed out, the ruling is almost certain to mean that
