Brokers need to update their systems and beware of old software, said Jim McGuiness, chief executive officer of InsurE-com.

McGuiness urged brokers to look at their basic systems, warning them that UNIX and DOS systems will not be supported for much longer.

He added: "Microsoft will also stop supporting Windows 95/98 after Christmas, so don't invest in anything like that.

"Brokers will need to move to a new system. And beware of pale imitations - if a software company says a product has a Windows look and feel, it isn't Windows."
