The Financial Services Authority yesterday pledged a crackdown on brokers who flout regulatory rules.

Stephen Bland, acting director of the FSA's small-business division, outlined a catalogue of violations that the regulator has already detected, while warning intermediaries that they face 'tough' inspections in order to rout out cheats.

He claimed assurances given by some firms to the FSA - effectively, assurances that they are compliant - are not being fulfilled.

He also said that some brokers
