Michelle Worvell speaks to Steve Carroll about his determination to expand Markel (UK), while at the same time adhering to the principles the specialist insurer holds dear - staying focused on local brokers and niche markets

As many brokers across the UK will confirm, it is often a challenge when a firm is taken over by another company. For Steve Carroll, divisional managing director of the retail division at Markel International - Markel (UK), his situation was no exception.

After Markel International acquired R E Brown Syndicate, the firm he worked for, in 2000, the insurer decided that it would morph into the retail division responsible for all business outside of London. However, Mr Carroll, now sitting in Markel

Peach and owner grow in 2025

Ageas UK GWP jumps as Esure deal flows in
